C.J. Van Wieren Honored For His Efforts In Season-Opening Triumph

Ferris State University senior quarterback C.J. Van Wieren (Holland/West Ottawa) has been recognized as this week's D2Football.com Co-National Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Bulldogs' 42-19 season-opening triumph over Kentucky State Saturday (Sept. 1) evening at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

C.J. Van Wieren In addition to earning the national honor, Van Wieren was also chosen as this week's recipient of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Offensive Player of the Week Award after helping account for five of the Bulldogs’ six touchdowns and compiling 412 yards of total offense in the win over KSU. He shared the D2Football.com national honor with South Dakota quarterback Noah Shephard, who was 25-47 through the air for 422 yards and five touchdowns in the Coyotes' 55-45 loss to West Texas A&M.

Van Wieren completed seven-of-eight passes for a personal career-high 294 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. He also added a team-best 118 rushing yards on 17 carries along with three TD’s running the ball. Van Wieren’s performance included a 79-yard scoring toss to senior receiver Mike Guevara (Manteca, Calif). He ran for two scores and threw for two more as the Bulldogs scored four consecutive touchdowns in the second and third quarters to take the lead for good in the contest.

Van Wieren's recognition as the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week represents the second time in his career he has claimed the distinction. He was previously recognized by the league for his performance in the Bulldogs' 33-27 conference victory over Mercyhurst in 2005 (Sept. 24) at Top Taggart Field.

The last Bulldog player to earn national player of the week laurels was former quarterback and current student assistant coach Ryan Kaul, who was chosen as the Don Hansen's Football Gazette National Offensive Player of the Week in 2005.

The 6-4 Van Wieren, who's also a member of the FSU men's basketball squad, presently ranks 14th in career passing yards at Ferris State with 1,177 yards to date. He rushed for 464 yards and eight touchdowns while making two starts at the quarterback position in 2006. Currently, he's ran for 945 yards and 15 touchdowns in his Bulldog career while completing 80-of-145 passing attempts with six TD tosses.

The Bulldogs will continue their season-opening homestand by taking on Mercyhurst in their GLIAC opener this Saturday evening (Sept. 8) at Top Taggart Field. Kickoff for the annual Community and Fireworks Night contest is set for 7 p.m. (EDT) with the fireworks show taking place following conclusion of the contest.
