Jim Yates Earns Special Teams Honor After Game-Winning Field Goal

Junior kicker/punter Jim Yates (Goshen, Ind.) of the 2007 Ferris State University football team has been named this week's (Sept. 24) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Special Teams Player of the Week following his game-winning field goal in Saturday's (Sept. 22) thrilling 44-41 Bulldog victory over Hillsdale at Top Taggart Field.

Jim Yates The 6-1 Yates converted a personal career-long 41-yard field goal try with only three seconds remaining to lift the Bulldogs past the previously unbeaten Chargers in Saturday's Community Health Night contest. The win snapped a two-game Bulldog losing streak and gave FSU its first triumph over Hillsdale since the 2004 season.

In addition to splitting the uprights on his game-winning kick, Yates also converted five of his PAT kicks in the outing. He punted four times for 133 yards (33.2 avg.) and pinned the Chargers inside their own 20 on two occasions. Yates also kicked off for the Bulldogs and compiled 454 kickoff yards on eight attempts (56.8 avg.) in a solid all-around performance.

Presently, Yates ranks sixth (1.5 pg.) nationally in made field goals per game, according to the latest (Sept. 24) NCAA-II National Statistics. Additionally, his six made field goals in his career is listed 12th on FSU's all-time chart. Prior to this year, Yates had never attempted a field goal in his Bulldog career. He's converted six-of-nine (.667) field goal tries and 13-of-14 (.929) PAT attempts this campaign.

Yates' 2,120 career punting yards to date represents the program's 10th-best career figure. He's averaged 38.5 yards on 55 career punts in his Bulldog career. In 2005, Yates' career-best 39.5 yards per punt average was the fourth-highest figure in school single-season history.

Yates is the second Bulldog player to receive GLIAC Player of the Week honors this year as senior quarterback C.J. Van Wieren (Holland/West Ottawa) picked up the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award following FSU's season-opening home triumph over Kentucky State (Sept. 1). He also attained D2football.com Co-National Offensive Player of the Week laurels for the performance versus the Thorobreds.

The Bulldogs continue their two-game homestand by hosting the Northern Michigan Wildcats in the school's Eighth Annual Hall of Fame Game Saturday (Sept. 29) afternoon with kickoff set for 2 p.m. (EDT) at Top Taggart Field. This year's hall of fame inductees will be introduced in a special halftime ceremony.
