The Ferris State University football team (4-1, 3-1 GLIAC) has vaulted back into the national rankings after a one week absence as the Bulldogs are listed 25th in two different polls released Tuesday (Sept. 30).

Ferris returned to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II National Poll this week in the 25th spot and also garnered its first D2football.com national ranking of the season in the same position.

FSU earned 65 total points in the AFCA poll conducted by head coaches from across the country following the squad's thrilling 31-24 come from behind Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) triumph over Northern Michigan this past Saturday (Sept. 27) at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs are one of only two GLIAC schools listed in either poll along with archrival Grand Valley State, which is ranked first nationally by D2football.com along with second in the AFCA poll. The Lakers handed Ferris its only loss of the campaign in the Anchor-Bone Classic (Sept. 20) by a 31-13 count in Allendale, Mich.

Ferris is the only newcomer to this week's AFCA poll, which is headed by top-ranked Valdosta State (Ga.). The Blazers received 21 first-place votes with GVSU earning two, third-ranked North Alabama receiving one and number four Abilene Christian (Texas) picking up two first-place votes.

GVSU tops the D2football.com weekly poll followed by North Alabama, Valdosta State, Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M in the top five.

The Bulldogs returned to the AFCA poll this week after being considered the nation's top unranked team receiving votes for the top 25 with 32 points last week (Sept. 23). FSU was previously listed 24th nationally in the AFCA poll two weeks ago (Sept. 16), which marked the first time Ferris State had ever been ranked among the nation's top 25 teams in the AFCA poll since the organization began publishing a Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll in 2000. The 2008 Division II Board of Coaches consists of 26 voters representing all Division II conferences, as well as independent schools. The poll is released on Tuesdays beginning and runs through the final week of the regular season.

Ferris' ranking two weeks ago also represented the first time the Bulldogs had been ranked in any national poll since earning preseason recognition as the nation's 18th-ranked squad in the 2007 Lindy's College Football Preview Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Bulldogs finished the 2006 season ranked 17th in Don Hansen's Football Gazette's final Division II Top 40 poll and 22nd nationally in D2Football.com's final Top 25 poll, which was the last time the Bulldogs garnered a national ranking by the online service covering Division II football prior to this week.

The Bulldogs travel to Michigan Tech this Saturday (Oct. 4) for a 1 p.m. (EDT) league game at MTU's Sherman Field in Houghton, Mich. The Huskies are currently 3-2 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC following this past Saturday's (Sept. 27) 52-6 setback at GVSU. MTU is not ranked this week after previously being listed 23rd last week by D2football.com.

Saturday's game will be carried live locally by WYBR (102.3 FM) and Jason DaDay will handle the play-by-play duties with Sandy Gholston and Rob Bentley providing color commentary. Live internet statistics and a video/audio pay-per-view webcast from Michigan Tech are also slated to be offered. Links for all media coverage will be posted on the FSU website and can be found by clicking the “internet event schedule” icon at www.ferris.edu/sports.
