FERRIS' CHAD WILSON NAMED NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Strong Safety Gains Recognition From D2football.com
Junior strong safety Chad Wilson (Howell) of the Ferris State University football team continues to reap the benefits from his game-winning interception as he was chosen today (Oct. 1) as the D2football.com National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in FSU's come from behind 31-24 triumph over Northern Michigan Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
D2football.com also picked current Glenville State (W.Va.) and former Central Michigan running back Jerry Seymour as its national offensive player of the week while senior punter Anthony Foster of Benedict (S.C.) claimed this week's national special teams honor.
Wilson, who was also honored as this week's (Sept. 30) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Defensive Player of the Week, picked off a Wildcat pass in the final seconds and ran it back 75 yards for a game-winning touchdown to cap the Bulldogs' thrilling comeback. He intercepted Carter Kopach's pass downfield at the FSU 25-yard line and cut back to the opposite side of the field before he eventually found paydirt with less than five seconds left in the game. The interception was Wilson's second of the season and he added nine tackles with six solo stops and two pass breakups in the victory.
“Their quarterback threw the ball and it really just came right to me,” said Wilson after the game. “The coaches always tell us to try and get to the sidelines when we make an interception like that and that’s what I was trying to do especially since everything was all jumbled up in the middle.
"Guys were making great blocks down the field for me and I was really just trying to follow the blocks and get to the end zone.”
Wilson's selection this week marks the first time a Bulldog player has claimed national player of the week accolades this campaign. Last season (2007), the Bulldogs had four players earn national player of the week honors from various sources, including current senior defensive tackle Jake Visser (Coopersville), who was also picked by D2football.com as a national defensive player of the week. Former quarterback C.J. Van Wieren was a D2football.com Co-National Offensive Player of the week a year ago while former slot Robert Miller and current senior kicker Jim Yates (Goshen, Ind.).
were both selected by Don Hansen's Football Gazette as All-Purpose and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively. Hansen's Football Gazette is not currently recognizing players of the week this season.
The 6-0 Wilson returned to the Bulldog lineup this campaign after missing most of last season due to injury and currently has recorded a team-high eight passes defended along with 21 total tackles and 14 solo hits this season. He has both of Ferris' defensive interceptions this campaign and has registered six breakups on the year while starting all five contests. His interception return for a score in Saturday's game represented his first collegiate touchdown.
In his career, Wilson has tallied 53 total tackles (34 solo), 11 passes defended and three interceptions in 17 outings. He started the first four games last season (2007) and made two starts in 2006 after redshirting as a freshman in 2005.
The Bulldogs, who are currently 4-1 overall and 3-1 in GLIAC action this season, travel to Michigan Tech this Saturday (Oct. 4) for a 1 p.m. (EDT) league game at MTU's Sherman Field in Houghton, Mich.
