Bulldog Skater Picks Up Weekly League Rookie of the Week Accolades

Mike Fillinger was chosen as this week's (Jan. 2) CCHA's Rookie of the Week after helping Ferris State claim the 2007 Toyota UConn Hockey Classic Championship title.
Ferris State University's Mike Fillinger (Grand Ledge), a freshman forward, has been selected as the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Rookie of the Week (Jan. 2) for his performance at the 15th annual Toyota UConn Hockey Classic last weekend (Dec. 29-30) in Storrs, Conn.

Fillinger earned All-Tournament team honors at the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic in helping lead the Bulldogs to the tourney championship title with a pair of victories over Brown (Dec. 29) and Connecticut (Dec. 30).

The 6-0, 170-pound left wing scored his first collegiate goal which also represented the game winner in Ferris' 2-1 victory over Brown in the tourney's opening semifinal round contest and then picked up an assist in the Bulldogs' 5-0 win against host Connecticut in the championship tilt.

In 10 outings this season, Fillinger has compiled two points with a goal and an assist apiece.

Prior to Ferris State, Fillinger played for the Mahoning Valley Phantoms of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and registered 44 points on 24 goals with 20 assists in 52 games during the 2006-07 campaign.

The weekly league honor is the third this season for Ferris State. Junior Evan Case (Grosse Pointe Woods) was chosen as the CCHA's Defensive Plaeyr of the Week (Dec. 3) and junior Mitch O'Keefe (Almonte, Ontario) was tabbed as the CCHA's Goaltender of the Week (Oct. 29). Ferris State, 9-8-1 overall and 6-6-0 in the CCHA, will host the U.S. National Development Under-18 Team this Friday (Jan. 4) in a exhibition contest at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
