USA Celebrates Inaugural "Hockey Weekend Across America" Event

Hockey Weekend Across America

Hockey Weekend Across America, a new initiative which USA Hockey is leading, will be held this weekend (Feb. 15-17) throughout the nation.

The objective of Hockey Weekend Across America is two-fold: Celebrate our game and all involved in the sport throughout the nation using all means possible. Provide opportunities for those who havent played hockey to try it, resulting ultimately in more people playing our game at all levels.

We've established a theme for each of the three days and listed are just a few ideas of programs that could be implemented.

Friday - Wear Your Jersey to School Day

Wear your favorite hockey jersey from any level (youth, high school, junior, college, pro).
Conduct hockey programming in schools (floor hockey tournaments in gym, guest speaker at school assembly or in classroom, local hockey celebrity reading in schools, etc.).

Saturday Bring A Friend To The Rink Day
Host open house to expose hockey to those who havent played (learn to skate program or similar).
Bring a friend(s) to your game.
Bring a friend(s) to a high school, junior, college or professional game who hasnt ever had a chance to attend.

Sunday Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day

Honor your favorite coach, timekeeper, official, player, etc., through a special recognition event, by way of a media story or through a feature on your website (or all of the above!).
Conduct a fund-raising event in which your local hockey heroes are honored.
Host an open house at which some of your local hockey heroes address attendees and talk of the benefits of participating in hockey.

Hockey fans are encouraged to visit HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com often for updates on happenings related to the event. You can register your events online at Hockey Weekend Across America Events and prizes will be given away each day of the Hockey Weekend Across America celebration at Hockey Weekend Across America Contests and Prizes. In Michigan, events being held are the "Hockey has Heart" campaign and "Hockey in the Hood", which is the first minority hockey tournament sponsored by the Detroit Hockey Association in cooperation with the National Hockey League's Diversity Task Force. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), FSN Detroit, the Detroit Red Wings and the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association are teaming up to bring a coast-to-coast celebration of the sport of hockey to participants and fans across the state. Michigan has nearly 70,000 registered players, coaches and officials in addition to almost 5,000 teams registered with USA Hockey, which is the most of any state in the nation. Hockey Day in Michigan will feature contests, clinics and a pair of televised college hockey games, including Michigan State at Western Michigan and Lake Superior at Michigan, broadcast on FSN. In conjunction with HDIM, the CCHA will hold two "Have Fun, Play Hockey" Clinics at Novi Ice Arena and Suburban Ice - Macomb. These clinics give boys and girls ages 5-11 an opportunity to experience the fun of hockey for the first time at no cost. To get involved or to have your event included in the list of happenings around the state on CCHA.com, please email hockeyday@ccha.com or call the CCHA Office at (248) 888-0600.

The Ferris State University men's ice hockey will be playing at home this weekend (Feb. 15-16) during the inaugural "Hockey Weekend Across America" as the Bulldogs entertain the nationally second-ranked Miami (Ohio) RedHawks in a two-game CCHA series. The puck will drop for both contests at 7:05 p.m. (EST).
