With Nelson's selection, the Ferris State men's ice hockey program presently features 35 skaters who have attained either CCHA all-rookie or rookie honorable mention kudos. A season ago, Justin Menke (Shamrock, Saskatchewan), Zach Redmond (Traverse City), and Pat Nagle (Bloomfield) all garnered league all-rookie honorable mention laurels.

Ferris State concluded the 2008-09 season at 12-19-7 overall with a ninth-place 9-15-5-2 CCHA mark (25 league points).
