Ferris State Freshman Netted His Second Goal Of The Season In A Bulldog Victory

Chad Billins
Freshman Chad Billins (Marysville), a defenseman on the 2008-09 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team, has been selected as this week's (Dec. 15) Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Rookie of the Week as announced this Monday (Dec. 15) by the league office.

Billins recorded a four-on-three power-play goal in the third period of last Saturday's (Dec. 13) 5-2 non-league victory over Alabama-Huntsville in his lone appearance of the weekend. The first-year collegiate skater also produced a season-best plus three efficiency rating in the contest to go along with a blocked shot as Ferris State sweep the Chargers in a two-game non-conference set at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

For the season, Billins has totaled seven points on two goals and five assists in 18 contests. The 5-9, 163-pound defenseman leads all Bulldog rookies in scoring and currently ranks 11th overall among the squad's leading points producers. He also is second on the team with 13 blocked shots and has generated a current plus one efficiency rating. Billins has compiled at least a point in six outings this season, which includes a season-high two points (both assists) in a non-league matchup at Robert Morris earlier this campaign (Oct. 17).

Billins is the second Bulldog skater this season to receive a weekly honor by the CCHA. Sophomore defenseman Zach Redmond (Traverse City) was chosen as the CCHA's Defenseman of the Week earlier (Oct. 27) in the 2008-09 season.

Ferris State, which is currently 9-8-3 overall and 6-6-2-0 in the CCHA this season, is presently idle until Jan. 2-3, 2009 when the Bulldogs compete in the Sheraton/TD Banknorth Catamount Cup in Burlington, Vt. FSU will take on St. Lawrence in Friday's (Jan. 2) opener at 4 p.m. (EST) before facing either Colgate or host Vermont in Saturday's (Jan. 3) consolation/championship game. The puck will drop for the tourney's consolation tilt at 4 p.m. (EST) while the championship contest starts at 7 p.m. (EST).
