Senior Corey Couturier (Traverse City) scored twice to help lead the Ferris State men's ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday (Dec. 13) night in a chippy non-conference tilt at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

Couturier was one of four Bulldog skaters to tally a goal in the contest, which featured a combined 81 minutes in penalties. Ferris State, which improved to 9-8-3 overall this season with the victory, went 2-for-6 on the power play while holding the Chargers (2-9-1 overall) to a 0-for-10 showing on the man-advantage. Shots were 33-28 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Junior right wing Cody Chupp (Big Rapids) put FSU on the board first with his sixth goal of the season off a rebound shot at 10:51 into the game. The Ferris State captain positioned himself on the left edge of the crease and was able to sneak the puck past UAH netminder Cameron Talbot for the 1-0 Bulldog lead.

In the second period, Ferris increased its margin to 2-0 when Corey Couturier netted his fifth marker of the year on a wrist shot at the 3:18 mark. The Chargers would erase the two-goal deficit within a two-minute span with back-to-back lamplighters at 3:58 and 5:44, respectively.

The eventual game-winning goal would come with 3:28 remaining in the second period on a 4-on-3 power play tally by junior right wing Blair Riley (Kamloops, British Columbia). The Bulldog assistant captain produced his seventh of the year on a one-timer from ithe left circle faceoff dot to give Ferris a 3-2 advantage going into the final period.

Ferris State would add to its lead in the third frame as freshman defenseman Chad Billins (Marysville) converted on a 4-on-3 man Bulldog advantage for his second of the year. Sophomore left wing Justin Menke (Shamrock, Saskatchwan) dished out his third assist of the night on the tally. With 3:16 remaining, Couturier chalked up his second goal of the contest and sixth of the season on a breakaway during a delayed penalty. Junior center Casey Haines (Indiana, Pa.) picked up his second assist in the process and joined Menke in attaining multiple helpers for the game.

Couturier was tabbed as first star of the game for the second straight night as the right winger finished the two-game series with a combined four points on three goals and an assist. Menke was chosen as the contest's second star as a result of chalking up three assists in the Bulldogs' final 2008 appearance.

Freshman goaltender Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) turned in complete-game 26-save performance for Ferris State in improving his season record to 4-2-2. The Bulldog netminder made 13 of his 26 saves in the second period. Cameron Talbot made 28 stops, including 14 in the second period, in the loss for Alabama-Huntsville.
