With the celebration of a new season, Ferris State University will be having a Student and Rink Appreciation Night this Friday (Oct. 10) evening as the Bulldog men's ice hockey team officially starts the 2008-09 season with a two-game non-league series against the Canisius Golden Griffins at FSU's Robert L. Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

Prior to the drop of puck at 7:05 p.m. (EDT), a special ceremony celebrating completion of the 3.3 million dollar Ewigleben Ice Arena Renovation project this summer will be held. University President Dr. David L. Eisler along with other special guests will participate in a pre-game ceremony.

The Ferris State Athletics Department will be recognizing the famed FSU student section "The Dawg Pound" for their enthusiastic and tremendous support of the Bulldog hockey team and as a result, all Ferris State students with identification will be admitted free of charge to this Friday's season-opening contest.

One of the many highlights of this Friday's festivities will be between the second and third periods of the game when the FSU Student Alumni Gold Club will unveil the Bulldog Mascot before the ice is resurfaced. The unveiling of the Bulldog Mascot is an annual Ferris State tradition as the Bulldog Mascot's identity is revealed when their time of service is completed.

The Ewigleben Ice Arena Renovation project included new rink slabs for both the main and half ice sheets along with new dasher boards and eight-foot tempered glass for both venues. Locker room renovations, new lighting, rubber flooring throughout the ice arena, expoxy coating to the bleachers, and new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment were installed. The Ewigleben Ice Arena, which is presently in its 34th year of operation, opened in 1974 and presently features a main ice surface which measures 85' by 200' with a corner radius of 28 feet. Named in honor of former Ferris State President Dr. Robert L. Ewigleben, the ice arena's seating capacity is 2,493. The facility serves not only as the home for the Bulldog hockey team but also Big Rapids High School, Big Rapids Figure Skating Club, and the Big Rapids Area Junior Hockey Association (BRAJHA) among others.
