Opening-Round Best-Of-Three Series Gets Underway This Weekend

Ferris State opens the 2009 CCHA Playoffs next weekend (March 6-8) at Nebraska-Omaha in a best-of-three first-round series.

The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team will visit Nebraska-Omaha next weekend (March 6-8) in a best-of-three Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) First-Round series at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb.

Opening faceoff for all three games if neccessary is 8:05 p.m. (EST).

The Bulldogs, under 17th-year head coach Bob Daniels, will enter the post-season league playoffs as the ninth seed while Nebraska-Omaha is seeded eighth. This weekend's playoff series between FSU and UNO will represent the first post-season action ever between the two teams. Ferris State sports a 20-49-3 all-time record (.299 winning percentage) in CCHA Playoff competition, which included a 3-2-0 ledger a season ago.

Ferris State concluded the 2008-09 regular season at 12-17-7 overall, which included a ninth-place 9-14-5-2 CCHA mark (25 league points). Nebraska-Omaha is 13-15-8 overall with an eighth-place 8-13-7-3 league record (26 league points) to date this campaign.

FSU registered a 2-1-1 mark against Nebraska-Omaha during the regular season as the two teams were CCHA clustermates this campaign.

The Bulldogs split a two-game set (Nov. 14-15) at Omaha, winning the opener by a 3-2 count before suffering a 4-2 loss in the series finale. The two teams would meet again on January 30-31 in Big Rapids, Mich., as Ferris skated to a 7-1 series-opening decision and then won a shootout by a 2-1 margin after skating to a 1-1 overtime tie versus the Mavericks.

Nebraska-Omaha, under head coach Mike Kemp, has a 14-9-3 lead over Ferris State in the all-time series and are 8-4-0 at home versus the Bulldogs. Ferris State sports a 4-2-1 record in its last seven encounters against the Mavericks, which includes a 2-2-0 road mark.
