CODY CHUPP CHOSEN AS A GIANT STEPS CIVIC AWARD FINALIST
Winners of the Giant Steps Award To Be Announced April 6
|Cody Chupp chosen as a Civic Leader Award finalist for National Student-Athlete Day Giant Steps Award.
Cody Chupp (Big Rapids), a junior student-athlete on the 2008-09 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team, has been selected as a finalist for a 2009 National STUDENT-Athlete Day Giant Steps Award in the category of Civic Leader.
Chupp, the Bulldogs' 2008-09 team captain, is one of five finalists for the Civic Leader Award. The other finalists are Sonny Hill of the Philadelphia 76ers, Rick Reilly of ESPN, Brittany Jones of St. Xavier University, and Adam Taliaferro of the Adam Taliaferro Foundation.
The National Award is given in the categories of Courageous Student-Athlete, Civic Leader, Athletics Administrator, Coach, Community or Academic Organization, and Parent, Teacher or School.
The winners of the Giant Steps Awards will announced on April 6, 2009 in celebration of this year's annual National STUDENT-Athlete Day. The actual Giant Steps Award will be presented to the winners at the annual Giant Steps Award Ceremony in October 2009 at Orlando, Fla.
The Giant Steps Awards, which was created by The National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), is currently co-sponsored by The NCAA, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and Northeastern University's Sport in Society. The Giant Steps Awards recognize individual student-athletes, professional athletes, athletics administrators, civic leaders, coaches, parents, organizations and other individuals who exemplify the ideals of balancing academics, athletics, life pursuits and giving back to the community through the spirit of athletics.
National STUDENT-Athlete Day celebrates the outstanding achievements of high school and college student-athletes who have excelled in academics (3.0 GPA or above) and athletics while having made significant contributions to their schools and communities. National STUDENT-Athlete Day was created 22 years ago to honor student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to their schools and communities.
This season, Chupp has produced 12 points with seven goals and five assists in 32 contests. The 6-0, 196-pound right wing has scored three power-play goals to go with two game-winning lamplighters this campaign. He has registered a squad fifth-place tying three multiple-point game performances this season, which includes recording at least a point in nine outings.
Chupp earned FSU Rookie of the Year Award recognition following the 2006-07 season with a team third-best 23 points (8-15=23) in 37 outings. The following season (2007-08), the Ferris State skater paced the Bulldogs in scoring with a career single-season best 30 points (11-19=30) in 39 encounters. Chupp was honored as the 2007-08 squad's recipient of both the Lloyd Earl Trophy as the team's scoring leader and the Blue Line Competitive Award as the squad's top competitor.
Chupp has currently amassed 65 career points on 26 goals with 39 assists in 108 appearances. The 2007-08 assistant captain has also posted a plus 17 efficiency rating while totaling 10 power-play markers, two short-handed goals, and six game-winning lamplighters in his collegiate career.
An elementary education major and a FSU Dean's Academic Award honoree, Chupp has been involved in such community activities as Make-A-Wish Adopt A Child, Friends of Playscape, Big Rapids Area Youth Hockey, American Cancer Society's Relay For Life, Big Rapids Area Junior Hockey Association (BRAJHA) among several others.
