Cody Chupp
Cody Chupp tallied his fourth goal of the season in Saturday's 4-2 loss at Nebraska-Omaha.
A pair of turnovers proved costly for the Ferris State menís ice hockey team as Nebraska-Omaha capitalized on the miscues to post a 4-2 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday (Nov. 15) evening in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) matchup at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb.

Junior center Cody Chupp (Big Rapids) put the Bulldogs on the board first with his fourth goal of the season. The FSU captain scored 4:02 into the contest just above the crease area after taking a pass from sophomore center Justin Menke (Shamrock, Saskatchewan) and putting one past UNO goaltender Jerad Kaufmanís glove side. The goal was setup after junior defenseman Matt Case (Plymouth, Minn.) shot the puck around the boards to the far left side where junior left wing Blair Riley (Kamloops, British Columbia) gathered the puck and backhanded to Menke in the left circle. Menke made a shifty move on a Maverick defender and directed a perfect pass right onto Chuppís stick which resulted in Kaufman have little if any recovery time to stop the puck.

Nebraska-Omaha would even the score up at 1-1 early in the second period on a wrister by Rich Purslow. The Mavericks posted the goal at 2:23 into the stanza as left wing Dan Charleston collected the puck off the back boards and setup Purslow for a far corner shot past the stick side of sophomore netminder Pat Nagle (Bloomfield). UNO, which produced a 23-17 shots lead after the first 40 minutes of play, enjoyed a five-on-three man advantage for four minutes in the later part of the period but was unable to get the go-ahead lamplighter.

The deadlock didnít last for long as the Mavericks would go ahead 2-1 just 50 seconds into the third period on a Bulldog turnover in their own zone during a UNO power-play opportunity. Dan Charleston picked up the loose puck between the circles and fired one past Nagle into the far left corner of the net straight on. However, Ferris State would come back to tie things up at 2-2 on senior right wing Corey Couturierís (Traverse City) second goal of the year with 15:25 remaining in the game. Courturierís shot from inside the right circle passed through the legs of both a UNO defenseman and Kaufmanís five-hole into the Maverick net. Junior left wing Casey Haines (Indiana, Pa.) wrapped around a pass from behind the Maverick net to Couturier. Both Haines and freshman center Derek Graham (Schoolcraft) were credited with an assist. But, the Bulldogs committed another costly turnover just over two minutes later when Jeric Agosta poke checked the puck away from sophomore defenseman Scott Wietecha (Wolverine Lake) outside the Ferris goal and proceeded to drive in on Nagle before releasing one beyond the reach of the sprawling Bulldog goalie to regain the lead at 3-2 with 13:33 showing on the scoreboard.

An empty-net goal by Matt Ambroz with seven seconds left in the contest sealed the win for the host team after Ferris pulled Nagle for the extra attacker with less than 30 seconds remaining to be played.

Nebraska-Omaha would finish the night by outshooting the Bulldogs 31-23. Pat Nagle (3-4-1) absorbed the loss despite making 27 stops while Jerad Kaufman (5-4-0) made 21 saves in a winning performance for the Mavericks.

Ferris State was unsuccessful in five power-play chances while Nebraska-Omaha posted one goal in 10 man-advantage situations.

The loss drops Ferris Stateís overall record to 5-4-3 overall and 4-2-2-0 in the CCHA this season while Nebraska-Omaha is now 7-2-1 overall with a 3-2-1-1 conference mark.
