FERRIS WINS FIVE-SET MATCH IN TAMPA CLASSIC'S FIRST ROUND
FSU opened play in the 2008 Tampa Classic by claiming a hard fought 3-2 non-league victory (25-17, 20-25, 20-25, 25-15, 15-9) over Eckerd (Fla.) this Friday (Sept. 5) at Tampa's Bob Martinez Center in Tampa, Fla.
The Bulldogs (5-1 overall) hit .231 for the match while the Tritons (3-3 overall) turned in a .118 hitting percentage. Ferris State recorded a 55-46 kills advantage and owned a 7.0 to 5.0 edge in team blocks.
Sophomore Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) paved the Bulldogs' offensively with a match-high 13 kills in 24 attempts for a .417 attack percentage. She also contributed with a match-best tying three block assists. Senior setter-outside hitter Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) recorded her second triple double-double of the 2008 season with 11 kills, 17 assists, and a match-leading 15 digs.
Redshirt freshman libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) compiled 12 digs while senior setter-outside hitter Candice Marut (Pinconning) dug 11 to go with 14 assists.
Freshman outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) produced seven kills for the Bulldogs, who hit .400 in sets one and five.
Ferris State rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win set four and force a fifth deciding set.
In the final set, Ferris State netted four straight points to take a 7-2 lead before the Eckerd reeled off three consecutive points to get within 7-5. But, the Bulldogs proceeded to register five of the set's next six points to go up 12-6. The teams alternated a point the remainder of the match as FSU prevailed.
