The Ferris State University men's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the 2007-08 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Basketball North Division Preseason Poll, which was announced Wednesday (Oct. 24) during the league's media day teleconference.

The poll was chosen for the first time in league history by selected members of the media and the GLIAC's Sports Information Directors. The 30-member group tabbed Grand Valley State and Findlay to win the conference's North and South Division titles, respectively.

The Bulldogs totaled 114 points in the balloting while finishing fourth in the North Division. Grand Valley State earned 29 of a possible 30 first-place votes and led the division with 209 points. Michigan Tech placed second with 156 points and Northern Michigan tallied the final first-place vote to go along with 130 overall points in receiving third place.

Findlay claimed all 30 first-place votes in the South Division and led the way with 180 total points. Wayne State came in second (115) and Ashland finished third (108).

On each of the 30 ballots, the first-place team in the North Division ballot received six points while the second-place team received five points, etc. In the South Division, the first-place team was granted five points while the second-place team took four points, etc.

In addition to the preseason media poll, the league also released a Preseason All-GLIAC Team, which was chosen by the conference's head coaches. Grand Valley State senior center Callistus Eziukwu was chosen as the GLIAC's Preseason Player of the Year.

"We have nine new players this year, but I've been happy with our competitive level," said FSU head coach Bill Sall, now in his sixth season at the helm. "We're looking forward to a good year in a tough league filled with great coaches and great teams."

The Bulldog men's basketball team welcomes back two starters and four letterwinners from last campaign. Ferris wrapped up its 2006-07 men's basketball season with an 10-18 overall record and made its fourth consecutive GLIAC Tournament appearance last campaign. The Bulldogs placed tied for third in the GLIAC North Division regular-season standings with a 8-10 league slate this campaign after advancing to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament the previous two seasons. FSU captured back-to-back GLIAC North Division titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05 along with advancing to the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen in 2004-05.

The men's basketball squad will square off against the University of Michigan for the first-time ever in an exhibition contest Thursday, Nov. 1, inside Crisler Arena at Ann Arbor, Mich. Game time for the contest is set for 7 p.m. (EDT) and it will also be televised live on the new Big Ten Network, which is available to selected satellite and cable subscribers nationwide. The Bulldog men are officially slated to open the 2007-08 campaign by hosting Hillsdale in non-conference play Saturday, Nov. 17, starting at 7 p.m. (EST) inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
