Bulldog Men's & Women's Squads Officially Hit The Floor On Monday

Ferris State opened official practice for the 2007-08 basketball season Monday. Among the returnees this year are Rachel Folcik (top) and Jason Holder (bottom) for the women's and men's programs, respectively.

The Ferris State University men's and women's basketball squads both began preparations for the 2007-08 campaign by holding their first official practices Monday (Oct. 15) afternoon in FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldog men's basketball team, which is guided by sixth-year head coach Bill Sall, welcomes back two starters and four letterwinners from last campaign. Meanwhile, the FSU women's squad returns three starters and eight letterwinners from one of the most successful seasons in school history under 10th-year head coach Tracey Dorow.

The Ferris State women's basketball squad, which advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history last season, was ranked 25th nationally in the final 2006-07 USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll. FSU posted a school-record 23 wins (23-9) last campaign while advancing to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championship Game for the first time ever. The Bulldogs, who prior to last year had never won a NCAA Tournament game, recorded back-to-back wins in their first two national tournament contests en route to the regional runner-up finish. Ferris also compiled a second-place tying 13-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season finish and earned the program's eighth consecutive GLIAC Tournament bid.

Ferris State wrapped up its 2006-07 men's basketball season with an 10-18 overall record and made its fourth consecutive GLIAC Tournament appearance last campaign. The Bulldogs placed tied for third in the GLIAC North Division regular-season standings with a 8-10 league slate this campaign after advancing to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament the previous two seasons. FSU captured back-to-back GLIAC North Division titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05 along with advancing to the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen in 2004-05.

The Bulldog women's basketball squad first hits the hardwood with an exhibition contest Thursday, Nov. 1, at NCAA Division I Central Michigan starting at 7 p.m. (EDT) inside CMU's Rose Arena at Mount Pleasant, Mich. Their first official contest will be Friday, Nov. 16, when FSU squares off against the host school in the Quincy (Ill.) Subway Tip-Off Tourney with tipoff set for 8 p.m. (EST) in Quincy, Ill.

The men's basketball squad will square off against the University of Michigan for the first-time ever in an exhibition contest Thursday, Nov. 1, inside Crisler Arena at Ann Arbor, Mich. Game time for the contest is set for 7 p.m. (EDT) and it will also be televised live on the new Big Ten Network, which is available to selected satellite and cable subscribers nationwide. The Bulldog men are officially slated to open the 2007-08 campaign by hosting Hillsdale in non-conference play Saturday, Nov. 17, starting at 7 p.m. (EST) inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

The men's basketball squad presenty has 14 players on its current preseason roster while the women's lineup features 15 players at this time.
