Bulldogs Will Battle Wolverines In Exhibition Play At Crisler Arena

The Ferris State University men's basketball squad will open the 2007-08 with the opportunity of a lifetime as the Bulldogs will square off against the University of Michigan for the first-time ever in an exhibition contest Thursday, Nov. 1, inside Crisler Arena at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Game time for the contest is set for 7 p.m. (EDT) and it will also be televised live on the new Big Ten Network, which is available to selected satellite and cable subscribers nationwide.

The game will also represent the debut for first-year Michigan head coach John Beilein, who previously led the University of West Virginia to four consecutive postseason berths, including two trips to the NCAA Division I Sweet 16 and an Elite Eight appearance in 2005. He directed the Mountaineers to the NIT Championship last campaign before taking over at Michigan.

"This will be a tremendous opportunity and it will be exciting for our players, many of whom are big fans of the University of Michigan and grew up watching them play," said sixth-year FSU head coach Bill Sall. "The chance to step out onto the court and play at Crisler Arena will also be a great experience.

"I'm looking forward to it as well since it will be a lot of fun to go out and coach against someone I have great respect and admiration for in Coach Beilein," Sall added.

The Wolverines return 12 letterwinners from last season's team, which posted a 22-13 overall record and tied for seventh place in the Big Ten (8-8) under former head coach Tommy Amaker. The lone returning starter, however, from a year ago is junior guard Jerret Smith, who averaged 5.7 points per contest. Last season, the Wolverines defeated Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) members Wayne State 85-51 (11/2) and Michigan Tech 85-50 (11/5) in exhibition play at Crisler Arena.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, welcome back two starters and four letterwinners from last season's squad that posted a 10-18 overall record and finished tied for third (8-10) in the GLIAC standings under Sall. Ferris won two consecutive GLIAC North Division titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05 in addition to making back-to-back NCAA Division II Tournament appearances in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

The contest represents the only scheduled preseason exhibition game for both teams. The Bulldogs are officially slated to open the 2007-08 campaign by hosting Hillsdale in non-conference play Saturday, Nov. 17, starting at 7 p.m. (EST) inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Michigan begins the year versus Radford Friday, Nov. 9, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. (EST) at Crisler Arena.

Crisler Arena has been the home for Michigan men's basketball games since it opened in 1967. The building stands at 107 feet with telescopic seating encircling the arena floor and bringing the total seating capacity to 13,751. Over two million Michigan basketball fans have been treated to Crisler Arena performances by some of the nation's top men's and women's basketball talent such as the Wolverines' 1989 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship Team.
