Senior Rachel Folcik Receives Distinction For Seventh Time In Her Career

For the second time in as many weeks this season, the Ferris State University women's basketball squad had a student-athlete named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week. Senior forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) was honored as this week's award recipient in an announcement from the GLIAC office late Monday (Nov. 26).

Rachel Folcik Folcik guided the Bulldogs to a perfect 2-0 mark as they hosted the GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Challenge this past weekend (Nov. 23-24) at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The 6-1 Folcik averaged 22 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in the two contests for FSU. She netted a team-high 20 points and a game-best 10 rebounds along with five assists in Friday's (Nov. 23) 77-69 triumph over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Folcik then recorded a game-high 24 points, hauled down 11 rebounds and dished out six assists as FSU topped Kentucky Wesleyan 73-69 to finish as the lone unbeaten team in the four-team event on Saturday (Nov. 24).

The 2007-08 GLIAC Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year honoree converted 16-of-32 (.500) shots in the two games, including a two-of-three (.667) performance from behind the three-point stripe. Additionally, she was 10-of-12 (.833) from the free throw stripe.

Last week (Nov. 19), Bulldog junior forward/center Jenna Guay (Escanaba) claimed this season's first divisional weekly honor following her performance in the season-opening Quincy (Ill.) Subway Tipoff Tourney (Nov. 16-17).

Folcik's recognition this week represents the seventh time she's earned the honor in her career. She previously attained the league weekly honor six of the final nine times it was awarded during the 2006-07 campaign. Folcik received the league's weekly honor more than any other male or female conference player last season.

As a junior last season, Folcik led the Bulldogs to a school-record 23 wins (23-9) and the programís first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen. The 2006-07 NCAA Division II Kodak/Womenís Basketball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-American was named to both the All-GLIAC North Division and All-Great Lakes Region First Teams last year in addition to the GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team. Folcikís 241 made field goals and 602 total points last season were both school single-season marks while her 261 rebounds was the second-highest seasonal figure in FSU history. The 2006-07 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Womenís Basketball College Division Second Team pick, who averaged a team-best 18.8 points per game, scored in double-figures 27 times last year and notched 13 double-double (points & rebounds) performances.

A team captain, Folcik also averaged a squad-best 8.2 rebounds per game last campaign. She finished the year listed second overall in scoring and fifth in rebounds among the GLIACís overall leaders while ranking second in both field goal (.555) and free throw (.860) percentage.

The Bulldog women's basketball squad opens GLIAC play by hosting Saginaw Valley State Thursday, Nov. 29, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. (EST) inside FSU's Wink Arena. Tickets will be available at the door starting one hour prior to tipoff. Ferris then visits Northwood Saturday, Dec. 1, to take on the Timberwolves in a 6 p.m. (EST) GLIAC clash at the Bennett Sports Center in Midland, Mich.

Both of this week's games can be heard live on Bulldog Radio. The station can be heard locally on television Channel 21 both via on-campus cable and Charter Communications in Mecosta County. In addition, a live 24-hour webcast of the signal is also available at www.bulldogradio.org.
