The Ferris State University women's basketball team opened a five-game homestand with a 78-63 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) setback to archrival Grand Valley State on Monday evening (Jan. 12) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs trailed by six points, 38-32, at halftime but were outscored by the Lakers 40-31 in the final half.

GVSU improved to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the GLIAC with the win while avenging its lone conference loss of the year. FSU previously beat the Lakers 74-64 to open GLIAC play on Dec. 1 in Allendale, but has since lost seven-straight conference encounters as the Bulldogs dropped to 3-9 overall and 1-7 in league action.

The visiting Lakers shot 44.8% (30-67) from the floor and forced 21 Bulldog turnovers. The Lakers converted seven-of-21 (33.3%) three-point tries and were 11-of-13 (84.6%) at the free throw line.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, sank six-of-22 (40.9%) three-pointers and 27-of-66 (40.9%) field goals in the loss. FSU was only three-of-four (75%) at the charity stripe.

Freshman Emma Veach paced the Laker attack with 22 points while Kara Crawford added 18 points and Kim Wyngaard netted 11 points.

The Bulldogs were led by freshman guard Kelsey DeNoyelles' 13 points. Sophomore guard Chelsea Simonetti added 10 points and senior forward Caitlin Hutchison chipped in with nine points.

FSU owned a slim 39-38 rebounding edge for the game and grabbed 15 offensive boards. Ferris totaled 20 assists, 10 steals and five blocked shots while the Lakers compiled 19 assists, 12 steals and two swats. GVSU finished with 16 turnovers.

Ferris continues its league home swing by hosting Tiffin on Thursday, Jan. 15, in a 6 p.m. (EST) league contest at Wink Arena. The Bulldogs then take on Ashland Saturday, Jan. 17, with the league home tipoff set for 12 p.m. (EST).
