A balanced effort fueled the Ferris State University women's basketball team to a hard-fought 74-64 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opening win over archrival Grand Valley State Monday (Dec. 1) evening at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 35-25 halftime edge and maintained that margin thru the second half to secure the win and even their record at 2-2 overall this campaign. GVSU dropped to 3-2 this season with the setback.

FSU increased its lead to as many as 14 points with 15:06 to play before the Lakers climbed back into the contest.

The Lakers were able to cut the Bulldog lead down to only three points with 3:51 to play, but back-to-back three-pointers by FSU freshman forward Kelsey DeNoyelles and her sister, sophomore guard Stephanie DeNoyelles, enabled Ferris to pick up the win.

Sophomore guard Becci Houdek paced a balanced FSU lineup with 14 points and was the only Bulldog player to reach double-figure scoring. Kelsey DeNoyelles and senior forward Caitlin Hutchison both chipped in nine points.

The Bulldogs shot 52.6% for the game and connected on six-of-16 (37.5) three-point tries along with eight-of-eight (100.0%) free throws. GVSU was limited to 39.6% (21-53) shooting and made seven-of-20 (35.0%) long range attempts along with 15-of-18 (83.3%) attempts from the charity stripe.

Freshman Emma Veach led the Lakers with a game-high 25 points.

The Bulldogs held a slim 30-29 rebounding edge and came up with nine offensive boards in the game. FSU forced 21 Laker turnovers and netted 18 assists, six steals and two blocked shots while GVSU finished with 12 assists, 10 steals and a single block.

In addition to a team-high 14 points, Houdek also dished out six assists for the Bulldogs.

The win was Ferris State's third series' triumph in the last four meetings with the Lakers.

Ferris State continues its season-opening road swing with a trip to Ohio this weekend. FSU opens the trip by taking on the Ashland Eagles Thursday (Dec. 4) with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. (EST) inside AU's Kates Gymnasium at Ashland, Ohio.
