Bulldogs Slated To Make Fourth Straight Great Lakes Region Appearance

Derek Radley
Senior Derek Radley and the Ferris State men's golf team are seeded second in the NCAA Great Lakes Region field.

For the fourth consecutive season, the Ferris State University men's golf team will be participating in the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships Super Regionals May 1-3 at Crest Hill, Ill.

The Bulldogs, who are coached by seventh-year mentor Brad Bedortha, are among eight Great Lakes Region teams slated to compete at the Central/Great Lakes Super Regional Tournament which is being held on the Prairie Bluff Golf Club course. Lewis (Ill.) University is serving as the event host. Five individuals from non-qualifying Great Lakes Region teams were also selected to compete.

Eighty teams and 50 individuals will be competing in the super regionals. The five super regional tournaments comprise the current 10 regions.

Ferris earned the second seed in the Great Lakes Region for the third straight year behind Grand Valley State. Northern Kentucky, the 2005-06 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Champions, are the third seed while Saginaw Valley State, which captured the 2005-06 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) title, is seeded fourth. Bellarmine, Northwood, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, and Indianapolis comprise the rest of the teams in the Great Lakes Regional field. The five individual participants are Dave Patronik of Gannon, Wisconsin-Parkside's Corey Sell, Eric Atsma of Findlay, Wayne State's Joe Wilson, and Sumeet Arora of Lewis.

The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not affiliated with a team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the 2006 NCAA-II Men's Golf National Championships May 16-19 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va. The finals are being hosted by Concord University and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Ten additional teams will also earn berths to the national championships tournament. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top 10 finishes of a super regional at the finals. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day’s total score.

In last season's (May 2-4) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional, Ferris tied for fourth-place honors by recording a three-round 915 team score at the St. Joseph (Mo.) Country Club course. Senior Derek Radley (Mentor, Ohio./Lake Catholic) fired a 12th-place tying 227 score to pace the Bulldogs. Ferris' most recent regional tourney title came in 2003 (May 5-7) as the Bulldogs tallied an 895 three-round strokes total at the Silo Ridge Country Club in Bolivar, Mo. FSU advanced to the NCAA-II National Championships (May 20-23) in Sunriver, Ore., and claimed 15th place by registering a 1,216 score in the 72-hole event.
