Derek Shelburne Posts A 224 Score To Lead The Bulldogs

Sophomore Derek Shelburne finished in a team-best sixth-place tie at the Geico Direct Invitational in Savannah, Ga.
The Ferris State men's golf team carded a 311-stroke total in Monday's (March 13) final-round play to finish third overall with a 914 team score (+50) at the GEICO Direct Invitational in Savannah, Ga.

The Bulldogs posted rounds of 309 and 294 in Sunday's (March 12) first and second-round action on the par 72, 6,845-yard Hunter Golf Course before registering a final-round 311 score. Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) claimed the team title with a 22-over par 886 while Morehead State (Ky.) carded an 899 score (+35) to finish in second place.

Sophomore Derek Shelburne was the Bulldogs' top individual finisher with a sixth-place tying 224 score (78-68-78--224, +8).

Junior Jeff Carlson was ninth with a three-round 227 (75-78-74--227, +11) and senior Derek Radley's 230-stroke total (78-73-79--230, +14) was good for a 19th-place tie. Junior Kyle Mason was three strokes behind Radley and finished tied for 24th with a 233 score (78-75-80--233, +17).

Senior Todd Griffin rounded out Ferris' scoring with a 253-stroke total (89-79-85--253, +37), which proved worthy of a 56th-place showing.

Competing as a non-scoring individual was senior Brett Hogen, who notched a 23rd-place 232 score (76-83-73--232, +16).

Armstrong Atlantic State's Chris Wolfe was the individual medalist with a three-over par 219 to tie Austin Hansford of Morehead State, but Wolfe won a sudden-death playoff.
