Bulldogs Six Strokes Back In Regional Event

The Ferris State men's golf team finished third overall among 19 teams in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tourney #2 held Saturday and Sunday (April 1-2) in Perry Park, Ky.

The Bulldogs fired a two-round score of 580 as they carded a 290 in both rounds of competition on the par 72, 6,916-yard course at Perry Park Golf Club. The event was hosted by Northern Kentucky University.

Grand Valley State won the team race with a 574, Northwood placed second (579) and Indianapolis was fourth (584). GVSU shot an opening round score of 585 and held a five-shot advantage over both FSU and Northwood heading into the final day of competition.

The field included members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) as well as the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

Junior Kyle Mason and sophomore Derek Shelburne both paced Ferris State as they tied for 17th place in the field with scores of 146 overall. Mason carded an opening-round score of 72 followed by a 74 Sunday while Shelburne fired a 73 both days.

Junior Jeff Carlson finished tied for 24th place (78-69 - - 147), senior Brett Hogen placed tied for 30th (74-74 - - 148) and senior Derek Radley was tied for 33rd overall (71-78 - - 149).

Mike King of Saginaw Valley State was the event's individual champion as he posted a two-day score of 136 after shooting a 69 and 67 in rounds one and two, respectively.

Ferris State will next take part in the Findlay Oiler Invitational Friday, April 7, in Findlay, Ohio.
