Defending Regional Champions To Be Their Sixth Straight Postseason Appearance

The Ferris State men's golf team will have the chance to defend its regional crown as the Bulldogs are among eight teams who will be taking part in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Super Regional on May 5-7 in Findlay, Ohio.

The Ferris State University men's golf team will have an opportunity to defend its NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship title as the Bulldogs have been selected to play in the 2008 NCAA Division II Central/Great Lakes Super Regional from May 5-7 at the Red Hawk Run Golf Club course in Findlay, Ohio. The announcement was made last Friday (April 25) by the NCAA-II Men's Golf Selection Committee.

Ferris State will be making its sixth consecutive regional tournament appearance as the Bulldogs are among eight teams taking part in the Great Lakes Regional, which is being hosted by the University of Findlay. Fourth-seed Ferris State will compete against Grand Valley State, Indianapolis, Wayne State, Northern Kentucky, Ashland, Saginaw Valley State, and Findlay. Grand Valley State will enter the postseason tourney as the top seed while Indianapolis, which captured the 2007-08 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) title, is the No. 2 seed. The remaining participants in seeding order are Wayne State (No. 3), Ashland (No. 6 ), Saginaw Valley State (No. 7), and host Findlay (No. 8) join Ferris State and Grand Valley State as Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member participating teams. Findlay was the winner of the 2007-08 GLIAC Championships last fall (Oct. 8-9) in Findlay, Ohio.

The five individuals participating are Thomas Hay of Drury (Mo.), Bellarmine's (Ky.) Kyle Leach and Brooks Herrick, Andy Hansen of Wisconsin-Parkside, and Lewis' (Ill.) Josh Butterfield.

The five super regional tournaments encompass the current 10 regions. The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not with a team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 14-17 at the Division II Spring National Championships Festival in Houston, Texas. The finals will be hosted by Rice University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority. Ten additional teams will earn berths to the finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional at the finals. For the 2008 championships, the additional super regional allotments are as follows: Atlantic/Southeast -- Three; Great Lakes/Central -- One; South/South Central -- Three; and West/Northwest -- Three.

All regional tourney participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each dayís total score.

2008 NCAA Men's Golf Championships The Bulldogs, under interim head coach Mike Mignano, finished the regular season with a fourth-place 595 two-round stroke total at the Great Lakes Region Tournament III (April 19-20) in Noblesville, Ind. Ferris State placed tied for second at the GLIAC Championships (Oct. 8-9) after carding a three-round 880 team score.

A season ago, Ferris State advanced to nationals after winning the 2007 NCAA-II Great Lakes Super Regional (May 7-9) in Joplin, Mo., with a first-place even-par 864-stroke total on the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club course. The Bulldogs entered the tournament as the seventh seed.
