Kelbi Lee's runner-up finish at the Ashland Invitational was instrumental in the Bulldogs securing top team tournament honors.

The Ferris State University men's golf team claimed the Ashland Invitational title Sunday (March 29) as the Bulldogs compiled a three-round 897 team stroke total at the par 72, 6,699-yard the Country Club of Ashland (Ohio) course.

Ferris State started out the action on Saturday (March 28) with scores of 287 each in the opening two rounds. The Bulldogs concluded the tournament with a final-round 305-stroke total to finish 15 strokes over par.

FSU was four strokes in front of second place Wayne State (883) while host Ashland (887) took third place. Findlay (922) was fourth and Northwood (928) placed fifth to round out the top five in the nine-team tourney field.

Senior Kelbi Lee (Billings, Mont.) lead the Bulldogs with a second-place 217 score (71-70-76=217, +1), which was four strokes behind medalist Steve Cuzzort (213, -3) of Wayne State.

Junior Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) turned in a noteworthy performance as well by garnering third place with a 219 (70-75-74=219, +3).

Redshirt freshman Garrett Simons' (Grand Ledge) 223 (70-72-81=223, +7) tied him with two others for sixth-place honors. Junior Pat Steffes (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Spring) produced a 224-stroke total (76-71-77=224, +8) to place tied for ninth.

Junior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) shot a 233 (81-74-78=233, +17) as did freshman Greg Meisner (78-76-79=233, +17), who competed as a non-scoring individual. Valley and Greg Meisner (Waterford/Kettering) both shared 21st place with three others players.

The tournament represented Ferris State's first one of the 2009 spring season.
