The Ferris State University women's soccer team was picked to finish seventh place in the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll as released by the conference office on Tuesday (Aug. 19).

The Bulldogs received 19 points to finish three points behind sixth-place Ashland in the balloting. Grand Valley State was picked to win the 2008 GLIAC title as the Lakers earned seven of the eight first-place votes while totaling a maximum 49 points. Saginaw Valley State was selected to finish second in the league standings with 37 points. Northern Michigan, which had the other first-place vote, attained 30 points to tie for third-place honors with Tiffin. The Dragons are entering their first season in 2008 as a GLIAC member after competing as a NCAA Division II Independent in previous seasons.

The league's eight head coaches participated in the balloting, but were not allowed to vote for their own team. The first-place team on each ballot garnered seven points while the second-place team received six points, etc.

Ferris State, under third-year head coach Neathan Gibson, returns eight starters from last season's team which posted a 6-12-1 overall record and compiled a fifth-place 4-4-0 conference mark. Headlining the list of returnees are a pair of 2007 All-GLIAC Second-Team performers in senior forward Tammy Unsworth and senior defender Jackie Back. Despite the loss of its top two scorers, the Bulldogs welcome back more than 40.2 percent (53-132) of its offensive production from a season ago which includes 34.8 percent of the squad's goal-scoring production.

The Bulldogs begin the 2008 season and their 10th year of intercollegiate competition on Aug. 29 taking on Southern Indiana at the Grand Valley State Tournament in Allendale, Mich. Ferris State then squares off against the defending 2007 national champion Tampa (Fla) on Aug. 31 in the tourney's match play. FSU begins conference play at home versus nationally third-ranked Grand Valley State on Sept. 14 with a 12 p.m. (EDT) start time scheduled at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
