The Ferris State women's soccer team scored first but it was Saginaw Valley State which tallied the most goals as the Cardinals produced a 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs Friday (Oct. 3) afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

Redshirt freshman defender Ellen Phillips (Middleville/Thornapple-Kellogg), a transfer from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, scored her second goal of this season at 5:23 into the match to give Ferris State a 1-0 lead. Phillips' corner kick was caught by Saginaw Valley State goalkeeper Anne Bershbach, but the Cardinal netminder stepped over the goal line for the Bulldog goal.

SVSU would answer seven minutes later on a penalty kick goal by Stephanie Roy and then took the lead for good at the 26:54 mark on Jacylyn Barrett's tally into the right corner of the FSU goal giving the visitors a 2-1 lead after the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Cardinals would account for the lone goal in the second half as Kim Oberski scored with 1:07 remaining in the contest on a breakaway.

Sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) netted 10 saves for Ferris State while Bershbach made five stops for Saginaw Valley State.

Ferris State (3-5-1; 2-3-1 GLIAC) and Saginaw Valley State (4-3-0; 4-1-0 GLIAC) both recorded 19 shots apiece with the Cardinals compiled a 13-7 advantage in the first half and the Bulldogs outshooting the visitors 12-6 in the second stanza. FSU lead in corner kicks by a 4-3 margin.
