Senior third baseman Katie Kraai (Zeeland) of the 2008 Ferris State University softball team has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Softball First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The teams were released Thursday (May 8) by CoSIDA.

Kraai, a nursing major, was among 11 individuals to achieve first-team all-district recognition as she sports a 3.93 cumulative grade point average during her four years at Ferris State.

A two-time (2005 and 2007) National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athlete, Kraai is batting a career season-best .307 average this season with a team-high tying 50 base hits in 163 at bats. A starter in all 50 contests this season, Kraai is the Bulldogs' leader in both doubles (17) and RBIs (32) while her 34 runs scored represents the second-highest total on the team. The 2008 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Teamer has belted three home runs while registering a .466 slugging percentage and a .358 on-base percentage. In the field, she has a .957 fielding percentage with 44 putouts and 158 assists in 211 total chances.

Kraai, a two-time (2006-07) GLIAC All-Academic Team pick, was chosen as the GLIAC Softball Player of the Week earlier this campaign (April 28).

The 2008 Bulldogs' lone senior, Kraai holds the distinction of being the program's all-time leader in career doubles with 49 total in 199 contests. She also currently ranks fourth place among Ferris' career leaders in RBIs (105), tied for fourth in home runs (12), fifth in at bats (625), tied for seventh in games played (199), and eighth in base hits (168).

As a result of attaining first-team accolades, Kraai now advances to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ballot. To qualify for academic team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. The college division of District IV includes all current student-athletes at the NCAA Division II, III and NAIA institution levels in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.
