The Ferris State softball team capped off its memorable 2008 season by tying for fifth place in the final NFCA Division II Top 25 Rankings Poll.

The Ferris State University softball team, which made its third NCAA Division II Softball Championship Tournament appearance in the program's history this spring, concluded the 2008 season ranked tied for fifth place in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Poll.

Ferris State, which competed in nationals for the first time since 1999, received 164 total points as did Francis Marion (S.C.). Humboldt State (Calif.) finished first in the final poll as the Lumberjacks captured the 2008 NCAA-II National Championship title. The 57-18 Lumberjacks garnered 200 points and all eight first-place votes, which was voted on by the NCAA-II head coaches representing each of the eight regions.

The Bulldogs concluded their storybook season with a 35-18 overall record while claiming the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament title. Ferris State, under 11th-year head coach Keri Becker, compiled a 4-0 regional tourney mark and shutout the opposition in all four of its tourney outings, including a 1-0 victory over 2007 national champion Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (May 11) in the Great Lakes Regional Championship game held at Edwardsville, Ill.

Ferris State finished with a 1-2 mark at the eight-team, double-elimination 2008 NCAA-II Softball Championships (May 14-17), which were held at Houston's (Texas) Memorial Park in conjunction with the 2008 NCAA-II National Championships Festival. The Bulldogs claimed a tourney-opening win over Francis Marion before suffering back-to-back losses to a pair of nationally-ranked teams in St. Edward's (Texas) and Lock Haven (Pa.). FSU held the opposition scoreless for 48 innings in NCAA postseason play before St. Edward's notched a 1-0 decision over the Bulldogs in a national championship tourney tilt (May 15).

Along with Ferris State, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) was represented by Wayne State (20th place).

Ferris' 35 victories this season represented the program's highest single-season wins total since 1999 when the Bulldogs accumulated a school-record 46-18 overall ledger. FSU has won at least 30 games in a campaign eight times in the program's 36-year history.

The Bulldogs, who were ranked 25th in the 2008 NFCA Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll, went unranked throughout the 2008 season but were listed among other teams receiving votes on four occasions -- March 5, 11, April 23, and 30.
