The nationally-ranked Ferris State University softball team has earned a berth in the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Softball Championship Tournament to be held May 1-3 and the third-seeded Bulldogs will square off against Northwood in this Friday's (May 1) opening-round action in Midland, Mich.

The site for the 2009 conference tournament has been moved to Northwood University in Midland and will be played at the school's two on-campus fields. The annual tourney was originally scheduled to be held at Emerson Park's Currie Stadium complex in Midland, but severe flooding of the area forced the GLIAC Executive Council to approve the change in venue.

Ferris State, which is currently 32-6 overall and finished tied for second place in the GLIAC regular-season standings with an 18-4 league mark, takes on the Northwood Timberwolves (17-22 overall; 11-14 GLIAC) at 10 a.m. (EDT) in a first-round matchup at NU's Auxillary Field. The winner will advance to face the Saginaw Valley State-Tiffin winner at 4 p.m. (EDT) on the NU Auxillary Field. Northwood is the sixth seed while Saginaw Valley State (31-9 overall; 18-4 GLIAC) and Tiffin (22-23 overall; 9-16 GLIAC) are seeded second and seventh, respectively.

The other bracket has top-seed Ashland (34-10 overall; 22-4 GLIAC) going up against eighth-seed Findlay (20-21 overall; 7-19 GLIAC) at 12 p.m. (EDT) with four-seed Wayne State (34-12 overall; 17-5 GLIAC) battling fifth-seed Grand Valley State (31-16 overall; 11-11 GLIAC) in another 12 p.m. (EDT) opening-round tilt. The winner of those two contests will play at 4 p.m. (EDT) on NU's Fisher Stadium Field.

The GLIAC Softball Championship game is scheduled for this Sunday (May 3) at 10 a.m. (EDT) and if necessary per the double-elimination format, the second contest will be conducted at 12 p.m. (EDT) to determine the tourney champion. The winner of the 2009 GLIAC Championship Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament (May 8-10) at a campus site to be selected this Sunday (May 3).

GLIAC Softball FSU, which is presently ranked sixth nationally in the latest (April 22) National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division Top 25 Poll, is seeking its third GLIAC Softball Championship Tournament crown. The Bulldogs won the conference tournament in 2000 and 2005.

The Bulldogs, under 12th-year head coach Keri Becker, have won 21 of their last 25 games to date this season. The Bulldogs are presently second in the latest (April 22) NCAA-II Midwest Regional rankings as released by the NCAA-II Softball Committee.

The 2009 season marks the fifth consecutive year in which only the top eight of the GLIAC's 10 teams qualify for the GLIAC Softball Championship Tournament. The criteria is based upon each team's regular-season conference record. The 1985 season marked the conference's first-ever post-season softball tournament.

All of the 2009 GLIAC Softball Championship Tournament games will feature live in-game scoring and can be viewed online at http://www.gliac.org/womens/softball/default.asp.
