Ferris State To Make Third Consecutive Regional Tournament Appearance

Senior Amanda Jager and the Bulldogs have now qualified for NCAA Regionals the last three years to date.
The Ferris State University softball team will be making its third straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Softball Tournament as the nationally sixth-ranked Bulldogs have been selected to play in the 2009 Midwest Regional II this weekend (May 8-10) on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Mich. The announcement was made late Sunday (May 3) evening by the NCAA-II softball selection committee.

The Bulldogs will face Northern Kentucky this Friday (May 8) in game two of the regional's first round while host Saginaw Valley takes on Lewis in the opening contest. Game times have yet to be announced for the double-elimination tournament. The winners of the two first-round matchups will square off this Saturday (May 9). The championship game of the sub-regional tourney will be conducted this Sunday (May 10).

Ferris State, which is presently 33-8 overall this season, will be making its seventh NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance in the program's 37-year history and its fourth such trip in the last five years. The Bulldogs won the 2008 Great Lakes Regional Tournament (May 7-11) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Ill., with a 4-0 tourney record. FSU started its current regional tourney appearance streak in 2007 with a Great Lakes Regional bid (May 10-13) at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill.

The Bulldogs, under 12th-year head coach Keri Becker, is currently seeded third overall in the Midwest Region. Northern Kentucky (31-21 overall), the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Tournament champions, is the region's sixth seed. The second seed is Saginaw Valley State (35-9 overall), which won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament for the second consecutive season (2008 and 2009). Rounding out the four-team sub-regional tourney field is seventh-seed Lewis (38-18 overall). The other Midwest Region Tournament is comprised of host Ashland (34-12 overall), the region's top overall seed, along with Wayne State (36-14 overall), Indianapolis (30-17 overall), and Missouri-St. Louis (29-17 overall). Wayne State is seeded fourth while Indianapolis and Missouri-St. Louis are the fifth and eight seeds, respectively.

The two sub-regional tournament champions will advance to the Super Midwest Regional to be held May 15-16 at the site of the remaining highest seed. The 28th annual NCAA-II Softall Championship Tournament is slated for May 21-25 at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va. A total of 64 teams will be taking part in the 2009 NCAA-II Softball Regional Championships.

NCAA Softball Ferris State presently sports a 15-7 all-time record in regional tourney action, which includes a 10-5 mark in its last 15 postseason tourney outings. The Bulldogs won back-to-back Great Lakes Regional Tourney titles in 1998 and 1999, both under current head coach Keri Becker. FSU has previously made regional tourney appearances in 1982, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2007, and 2008.
