The seventh-ranked Ferris State University softball team chalked up another two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) wins Sunday (April 5) afternoon as the seventh-ranked Bulldogs knocked off Northwood, 6-1 and 4-0, at NU's Fisher Stadium in Midland, Mich. A two-run home run in the sixth inning by senior Holly Bruntjens proved the decisive hit in the opening game while junior Kayle Stevenson tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout in the game two decision over the Timberwolves. The two league wins improved Ferris State's season record to 21-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference. FSU has prevailed in 10 of its last 11 outings to date.

Game One - Ferris State 6, Northwood 1

Ferris State's Holly Bruntjens's (Gladstone) two-run home run highlighted a four-run six inning as the seventh-ranked Bulldogs defeated Northwood, 6-1, in the opening game of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Midland, Mich.

Bruntjens' third home run of the season in the top of the sixth snapped a scoreless tie as the victory improved Ferris State's record to 20-3 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC.

Following Bruntjen's two-run blast, senior outfielder-pitcher Shannon Roney (Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn Glenbard South) belted a solo homer to give FSU a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs would add another run in the frame on freshman third baseman Makenzi Peterson's (Big Rapids) one-out RBI single to center field.

Northwood, which dropped to 9-16 overall and 3-8 in the GLIAC, tallied its lone run of the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning with an unearned run off starting pitcher Holly Bruntjens (7-2), who finished with eight strikeouts and gave up five hits in five-plus innings. Shannon Roney earned her second save of the season with two and two-third innings of scoreless relief. She allowed just two hits and fanned three NU hitters.

Ferris' would add to its run total in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs. A Timberwolves' throwing error allowed senior first baseman Amanda Jager (Kalamazoo/Comstock) to score an unearned run and sophomore shortstop Lynsay Weaver's (Bay City/All Saints) RBI sacrifice fly to left field marked the game's final score.

Makenzi Peterson and Shannon Roney's two hits apiece were tops for the Bulldogs, who were outhit by a 7-5 margin.

Game Two - Ferris State 4, Northwood 0

A dominant pitching performance by junior Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) propelled the seventh-ranked Ferris State softball team to a 4-0 win over Northwood in Sunday's (April 5) second game of the GLIAC doubleheader at Midland, Mich.

Stevenson tossed her second shutout of the season as the southpaw allowed just four hits in a complete-game seven-inning effort. She walked three and produced two strikeouts to improve her pitching record to 6-0.

Ferris State gave Stevenson all the run support needed with a run in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the third frame. Junior designated player Rhea Flores' (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson) RBI single accounted for the Bulldogs' first run while senior first baseman Amanda Jager proceeded to drive in two more Bulldog runners in the third on a two-out, two RBI double to give FSU a 3-0 lead. Ferris State increased its margin to 4-0 in the sixth inning as Flores leadoff the frame with a single and would eventually score on a Northwood throwing error.

While a solid pitching performance by Stevenson proved vital so too did balanced hitting by FSU as six different batters notched at least one base hit. Sophomore outfielder Rachel Wade (Canton) and Rhea Flores paved the way with two hits apiece as the Bulldogs collected eight hits as a team.
