New Coach Leads FSU Softball

Ferris State women's softball finished at 40-20 and second in the GLIAC under the direction of first-year head coach Keri Becker in 1997.

A winning attitude. That's what first-year head coach Keri Becker has brought to the Ferris State University softball program.

Ferris, which was 25-34 a season ago and fifth place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, bounced back in a hurry to post a school record with 40 victories and a runner-up GLIAC finish this spring. Becker was named the 1997 GLIAC "Coach of the Year" for her efforts.

"I like to keep the game simple," Becker said. "I knew there was enough talent on this team to just let them play. Our success was determined by our players relaxing and playing fundamentally sound ball."

Ferris placed two players on the NCAA Division II All-Great Lakes Region Softball team. Outfielder Jody Gifford and catcher Shawn Martinez were named to the squad by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Gifford led the Bulldogs with a .396 batting average, including 72 hits, 40 RBI, 45 runs, 8 home runs, 13 steals and a .615 slugging percentage. She was also named to the NCAA II All-America Third team and the All-GLIAC squad.

Martinez was a second team All-Region choice and finished the 1997 season with a .333 average, 56 hits, 28 runs and 20 RBI.
