Ferris Senior Chosen As Week's Top Performer Following ITA Regionals

Ferris State University senior Molly Basha (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) has earned this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week Award as announced Tuesday (Sept. 19) by the league office.

Basha compiled a 3-1 overall singles mark and a 5-0 doubles record last weekend (Sept. 15-17) at the 2006 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Region Championships, which were held in Midland, Mich. She teamed up with fellow Bulldog senior Marissa Muchow (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) to win the regional doubles title and earn a berth into the ITA National Small College Championships slated to be held Oct. 12-15 in Fort Myers, Fla. The duo, which was seeded fifth overall in the draw, posted an unbeaten (5-0) mark in the event.

In addition, the top-seeded Basha won three of her four singles matches and advanced to the semifinal round in singles play before falling to eventual champion Mouna Sabri of Drury (Mo.). All three of her singles victories came in straight-sets.

Molly Basha Muchow and Basha, who were seeded fifth overall in the draw, defeated Sabri and Drury teammate Khrystsina Tryboi by a score of 8-2 in Sunday's (Sept. 17) title encounter. The duo previously had posted an 8-3 triumph over Northwood's Julia Goncalves and Desiree Roset, who were seeded seventh, in the semifinal round. The ITA regional event, which was hosted by Northwood University, included both singles and doubles competition. Participants from all schools in the Great Lakes Region were included in the field with the individual singles and doubles champions earning automatic berths into the national championship field.

The 5-7 Basha posted an 18-5 overall singles record during the 2005-06 campaign, including an 8-1 GLIAC mark at the number one singles flight while earning All-GLIAC First Team laurels for the second consecutive season. She previously claimed runner-up singles recognition at the 2005 ITA Great Lakes Regional Championships. Basha, who was 15-5 overall in doubles play last season, currently is 55-17 in career singles matches and 52-14 all-time in doubles competition.

Basha is this season's third recipient of the GLIAC Player of the Week Award. The selection represents the second time in her career Basha has earned the distinction as she also was the first women's tennis player ever to attain weekly award accolades when the league began recognizing the honor at the start of the 2004-05 campaign (9/21). The winner is chosen each week by the conference's member head coaches.

Ferris State, which is guided by second-year head coach Jing "Amy" Sun, posted an 8-1 triumph over Kalamazoo Valley Community College Monday (Sept. 18) in an exhibition match at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs officially open GLIAC action at home Friday, Sept. 22, versus Mercyhurst starting at 3 p.m. (EDT).
